Bio
Brion Goldsmith, is a self-taught artist who has developed his
expressionist style through a natural intuition for application
techniques. He began experimenting with oils at the age of sixteen and immediately sought
inspiration from post-war abstract expressionist artist, such as
Willem de Kooning, Chaim Soutine, and Canada’s Jack Bush. In his
early work, Brion primarily deals with the subject of human form,
bringing to the canvas mysterious and often haunting images of the
human condition. Brion’s passion and confidence with his medium and
subject are evident in the way that the colours of his work
effortlessly blend together, creating soft, yet brilliant shades of
blue, brown, and red.
Brion’s recent work
demonstrates his ongoing commitment to artistic vision and exploration
in style. His concentration is increasingly focused on perfecting the application techniques that give many of his new paintings the
simplistic appearance of abstract expressionism. Relinquishing the harmonious brushwork
and figurative shapes of his early work, he now works with thick
colourful paint that is forced together with harsh, jagged lines. Brion’s canvases radiate with yellows, greens, and reds that spill
out over discontinuous black outlines. Grotesque forms and distorted
shapes emerge from Brion’s larger-than-life-canvases, dwarfing viewers in
hyper- representations of the human psyche.
Chatham’sThames Art Gallery held Brion’s first solo exhibition in 1996, and
in 1999, a donation of Brion’s works was added to the acquisitions
of the gallery. Since 2000, Brion has participated in numerous London area exhibits and art festivals. His most recent works can be viewed at the newly
established Brion Goldsmith Studio Gallery, London, Ontario.
